Campus Surge: The L.A. Church's campus ministries helped more than 100 college students become true disciples of Jesus Christ last year.

A group of disciples went to Santa Barbara in the summer and shared their faith to prepare the ground for a campus mission team planting.

There, Long Beach campus minister Steve Stevenson shared his faith with Hector's girlfriend, Yasmin Reyes. She was open to the gospel, so Steve connected her with Santa Barbara women's ministry leader, Rebekah Tang, who began to teach Yasmin how to become a Christian.

Jasmin then invited Hector, who lives in Long Beach, to go with her to a campus ministry retreat in San Diego. There, she introduced him to Steve (the guy who first shared with her) and brothers who attend college in Long Beach. After learning the basics of Christianity, Hector and Yasmin both submitted their lives and hearts to the Lordship of Jesus and were baptized in November. campus100.jpg

Hector, a United States Marine Reservist who has served in Iraq, will leave for Afghanistan later this year. He said he is looking forward to sharing his faith with fellow Marines.

In Orange County, the campus ministry saw 22 college students baptized and/or restored in 2007. The group now has 63 students.

The O.C. disciples held an all-night prayer session just before fall semester began. During the first week of school, they gathered for prayer and devotional times each morning and reached out to as many people as possible.

God worked through O.C.'s "rush week" campaign: they had 80 guests that week to devotionals, small group Bible Talks, personal Bible studies and Sunday worship service. That helped propel the ministry at Cal State Fullerton to grow from three students to 19 students last year. Go Titans.

Bruin and Trojan fans should also feel encouraged: the church's ministries at UCLA and USC both doubled in 2007.

Even in summer, which can be a slow time for college evangelism, L.A. campus ministries had 28 baptisms -- a number the ministers attributed to the church's innovative summer-intern exchange program.

"I am so proud of our campus ministers and college students," congregational evangelist Bruce Williams said. "They have a deep love for God and compassion for the lost. We are seeing so many more great students commit their lives to Christ and have plans to plant several more campus ministries in 2008."
