Youth and Family Deacons Appointed in East Africa

“Be … willing, … eager to serve; examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:2,3

It was a great moment for the church in Nairobi, Kenya when Edward and Anyima Okundi were recently appointed Deacon of Youth and Family within the East Africa family of the International Churches of Christ, which is appropriate because of their youthfulness and their dynamic family. They will oversee the Youth and Family Ministry in the church in Nairobi and help in the congregations across East Africa.
East Africa lead Evangelist and Women’s Ministry Leader John and Jane Maleya, ordained the Okundis before a mammoth audience at the Nairobi church’s sanctuary and had kind words for the Okundi’s for their exceptional service to the Kingdom over the years, especially to the Kids Kingdom.

Edward in his appreciation speech thanked God for the new responsibility, and for giving him a great family and a wife who have taught him more than he knows about himself. He challenged the congregation to aspire to rise up in their service in the Kingdom.

Anyima acknowledged God and the leadership of her husband, adding also, “The bible talk has encouraged my family all the way.”

“The task that God has bestowed on us is not easy. Many come into the church from dysfunctional families with a lot of misconceptions about parenting, so we need training and shepherding so that we align ourselves to God’s vision of youth and family,” said Edward.

Addressing the church he added, “Our role as deacons is to be champions in shepherding God’s families, assisted by the church leadership. This will not be possible without your support. Above all pray for us.”

The Okundis’ story dates back to the London Church of Christ where they became disciples and met. Edward was baptized on November 7, 1988 while Anyima was baptized on March 19, 1992. Though still living in London at the time, Edward and Anyima had a colorful wedding in Nairobi on June 25, 1995 and have been blessed with three children: Amira, 15 , who was baptized last year (second right in picture); Malaika, 11 (extreme right); and Amani, 9 (second left).

Edward and Anyima have held different roles in the kingdom over the years, both in London and Nairobi. Edward previously led the campus ministry, Anyima has led numerous sisters in different capacities, and the two of them have served as zone and sector leaders.

Let us keep Edward, Anyima and the Youth and Family Ministry in East Africa in our prayers.
